Materia Sonora

Cover of the Materia Sonora podcast by Andrea Piccioni

Conversations on the Italian frame drum

The Italian frame drum, told by the people who play it: those who keep it alive at village feasts, those who reinvented it, those who teach it and those who study it.

Maybe there is a tamburello in your home too: hanging in the kitchen, or forgotten in the cellar. And yet, inside a community, the very same instrument carries a whole night of celebration. Materia Sonora starts from one question: why does an instrument so necessary within a community become an ornament as soon as it leaves it?

How it works

In each episode I meet someone who plays this instrument: those who keep it alive at village feasts, those who reinvented it on stage and in schools, those who teach it and those who study it. We talk about origins, gestures, change and transmission, and we listen to the guests' own sounds: short fragments that open up their world.

Each episode is a conversation, audio only, in Italian. I don't have a ready answer: what I have is a path, my own, and at every step a question. First I ask it of myself. Then of the people who play this instrument, build it, study it.

Every episode ends the same way: “Instruments are not symbols. They are matter.”
